On Tuesday July 9, the villages of Black Earth and Mazomanie, along with the Dane County sheriff's department, hosted the 3rd Summer Recreation Activity: Cooking Day at Macker Backer Restaurant. 63 local children attended. This week Macker Backer Restaurant graciously offered to host a cooking day. The plan was for every child to participate in making their own personal size pizza. The staff later decided to fold the crust over and make calzone type pastries. It was an amazing day. This was a brand new event for our Summer Recreation Program and we did not know what to expect. The owners and staff at Macker Backer went above and beyond to give our youth a great experience. We did not expect to get 63 participants. This was a lot to manage, but in the end it was so worth it. Our Facebook post for this event got 3,996 hits and 28 individual comments in less than 24 hours. The smiles we got from the youth were priceless. The goal has always been to build relationships and this event proves our success. Deputy James Kartman said he was exhausted by the end of the day, but was proud of what was accomplished. He thanks Deputy Viney, Alwin, Sarah Shatz from JFF Social Services, and all the parents who helped make this event possible. For more photos, see page 10
