Solving a family secret

When I ask readers why they enjoy mystery novels, I receive a wide variety of answers, although there are some common themes.

The most frequently-given response is that mysteries are cognitively challenging, giving readers a puzzle to solve. Many of us enjoy seeing how quickly we can unravel the puzzle before the answer is finally revealed. Some dislike “red herrings”, which are false clues the author gives to lead us away from the trail, while others value the twists and turns for the extra difficulty it causes as they try to crack the case.
