Yesterday I watched Notre Dame Cathedral burn.

It was emotional for me, and I think for many people. The cathedral is so many different things to people. It's a place of worship, a national identity, a grand architectural achievement. It lies in the heart of ancient Paris and is one of the most uniquely French things about the capital, next to the Eiffel Tower, or even moreso.

I have a particular relationship with churches. Raised Roman Catholic, I attended a traditional Catholic Church as a child. Although not old, it was a grand building. In my teenage years, I attended a different church...
