Sauk County eagle population increasing, spreading out from river valley

Sauk County's number of eagle visitors seems to be on the rise.

In just a matter of decades, the eagle population has flourished and spread far out beyond the Wisconsin River

What's more, all this recent snow has driven the eagles north, meaning there are even more opportunities to see the majestic raptors in flight.

In 1973, around 105 nesting territories were identified in the state. Now the number has ballooned to 1,695, said Jeb Barzen, an ecologist with the Sauk City based Ferry Bluff Eagle Council.

"Eagles are now occupying areas we never thought they'd occupy," he said.
