"I had to Google 'the inside of a beaver's mouth,'" laughs sculptor John Pahlas, standing next to his hulking, 700-pound steel installation in the lobby at Duluth Trading Company's new world headquarters in downtown Mount Horeb. "It's not something you want to Google. It can be a little traumatic. But I really wanted to get the esophagus right."

This angry beaver, which is a symbol of industriousness, vigor and playfulness for the company, was both a challenge and a joy for the artist, who described it as "like a jellybean on its side, but with feet and teeth" while he spent four months wor...
