Turning Back the Clock: two ways of crossing the river-a wagon toll bridge and a ferry

January 24, 2019

At right, this image was taken in 1909 in Sauk City and shows the wagon toll bridge. There is a building on the left, and a man is sitting on a bench on the right side of the road leading onto the bridge. The image is included in the Harry Ellsworth Cole papers, 1837-1929 collection at the Wisconsin Historical Society. By Kara O'Keeffe. At left, this photo from June 5, 1897 shows a group of ladies on the ferry on the Wisconsin River. They were part of a group of about 50 Mazomanians who went to Honey Creek for the day to climb the bluffs and picnic! Thanks to the Mazomanie Historical Society for the photo.
