Missing boy returned to grandparents in Merrimac; mother took him to Virginia

A Merrimac boy is on his way home from Virigina after his birth mother failed to drop him off after a scheduled visit and took him.

On December 23, 2018 at approximately 7:45 p.m. the Sauk Coty Sheriff’s Office was requested to respon to a residence in the Township of Merrimac for a report of a missing child.

It was reported that 9 year old Mason Byrdic has been placed by the State of Virginia Courts with his grandparents who reside in Sauk County. On December 23, 2018 at approximately 11:00 a.m. the grandparents agreed to allow the child’s biological mother, Julia Anne Byrdic, age 29 of Pompano Beach, Florida, to take the child for a short visit. Byrdic failed to return the child as agreed upon and fled to Virginia Beach, Virginia.

On December 27, in coordination with the Virginia Beach, Virginia Police Department, Officers were sent to this location and found Julia and Mason hiding in a bedroom. Julia Byrdic was taken into custody under the charge of Interference with Custody-Beyond Visitation which is a Class F Felony. She is incarcerated in Virginia and is awaiting extradition back to Sauk County.

Mason is safe and with the Virginia Beach Police Department and Child Protective Services waiting the arrival of his guardians to take custody of him.

The Sauk County Sheriff’s Office thanks all who called in with tips and assisted with this investigation to safely reunite this child with his guardians.
