Before there was the Vintage Brewery in Sauk City there was the Sauk City Brewery. This image is from the Sherwin H. Gillett papers and photographs, 1880s-1964 collection at the Wisconsin Historical Society. The image shows the view from an unpaved road with workers gathered in front of the brewery building. One of the men holds a young child and two other men stand next to a boy a two dogs. There is also a man leaning out of a window and a horse and wagon are parked in the background. According to the website, oldbreweries.com, the Sauk City Brewery was open for seven years, from 1882-1889. Sauk City was an active brewing city with at least six breweries being listed under the town at one time or another. By Kara O'Keeffe
