Sauk County to celebrate Indigenous Peoples' Day in October

A new celebration will take place starting next fall.

Sauk County Board unanimously accepted a proposal declaring the second Monday in October as Indigenous Peoples’ Day.

The day would give residents a chance to celebrate both Sauk County’s past and present, said Rob Nurre, volunteer caretaker of Man Mound Park. The county’s very name is derived from American Indians, and it was only 180 years ago that the Ho-Chunk were forcibly removed, said Nurre, who commented as a citizen supporter at the start of the meeting.

“This is fairly recent history,” he said.
