Sauk Prairie Optimist Club honors hometown heroes

At the September 5 Sauk Prairie Optimist Club meeting, Steve and Sandy Koehler were presented the Modern Woodman Hometown Hero award by Optimist President Jeff Boll. The award certificate states "Modern Woodman of America recognizes that Steve and Sandy Koehler believe in volunteer service...and appreciate your contribution to the community. You are truly a hometown hero." Both Koehlers began their volunteer work with the local 6:8 volunteer organization by building two MADCAP houses for needy families in Canton, Mississippi with Sauk Prairie High School students. They participated in a build project for the last three years with schools in Guatemala. More recently they have been on Fuller Center house builds in Armenia, Nicaragua and are scheduled to go on a build in Cape Town, South Africa later this fall. They have worked on Habitat for Humanity builds in Honduras, Kyrgyzstan, Nepal, Fiji, Thailand and Argentina as well. In addition to being involved in the Sauk Prairie Optimist Club and their volunteer efforts for youth, Steve and Sandy have been involved in many local community volunteer efforts. The Sauk Prairie Optimist Club meets Wednesdays at the Blue Spoon Café' in downtown Prairie du Sac. The first meeting of the month is at noon; the remaining meetings of the month are at 7 a.m.
