I hung up on my grandmother midsentence and turned away from the phone.

She’d called the hospital to find out how I was feeling. I had a life-threatening case of encephalitis and meningitis, so I wasn’t great.

When they passed me the cream-colored phone that smelled of pathologies and disinfectant, I held it up to my right ear, as always, and heard a barely perceptible mumbling and a high-pitched ringing, like some distant smoke alarm beneath which someone was mumbling. There was also a dash of something like the snowy sound of an old-fashioned television that has lost its signal.
