Last Tuesday, my day began at 12:15 a.m., although I didn’t realize it at the time, it would end 22 hours later. I had an easy day, compared to many in the area.

My cell phone woke me up, blaring a flash flood alert for Dane County. Before I became editor, I would have gone back to sleep, because I live in an area that won’t flood—unless the Wisconsin River rises 25 feet. But I did get up, logged on the National Weather Service webpage, and read the alerts. At that point in time, the reports listed flooding in Madison and Middleton, and nothing more.
