On Tuesday, July 24, the Villages of Black Earth and Mazomanie hosted the 3rd Summer Recreation Activity: Free Fishing Day. 57 kids participated. The event was held at the Arena Fish Hatchery Pond. This pond is owned by the Village, and classified as a Hatchery Pond, so it does not fall under DNR laws which means any parent or adult is free to fish without needing a license. The Pond also has a disabled Pontoon Boat on one side of the pond for anyone to stand on while fishing. Several children did use the boat for fishing. DNR Warden Jake Donar, the Arena Police Chief Lonnie Drinkall, and Kim Ferrie (resident and owner of dryflysales.com) came out to help. It was great to have extra help and nice to be able to involve more local law enforcement in the recreation program. There were a lot of dedicated parents who were instrumental in assisting the kids with lines and removing fish. The weather was hot, but so was the fishing.
