Quiet on the river, Fire on the River

July 12, 2018

Finn Hill-Gorman

The sunrise captured from an island in the Wisconsin River, just north of Mazomanire. The 4th of July weekend is one of the most popular times for people to camp out on the sandbars in the river. Camping on the island, a potluck, and playing in the river is a tradition started by the Dally/Vetter family when their kids were young. Timm Zumm, from Friends of the Lower Wisconsin Riverway, ferries campers out to the island with his motorboat, while other campers canoe. The group launches into the water in Sauk City as the fireworks from Fire on the River start. Then they float in the darkness the few miles down to the island.
