Dear Friends,

We talk a lot about freedom, especially as Independence Day nears. But what does freedom really mean? To get technical, the dictionary defines it as the ability to act freely or the state in which someone is able to live as he or she chooses without being subject anyone.

We often think about Independence Day in terms of fireworks, remembering past wars, and having freedom to do what we want. Freedom to think for ourselves; what we want, what we think we need.

Don’t get me wrong, I like this kind of freedom. I enjoy my freedom to vote, to speak, to worship the God I believe in. I give thanks for the many who fought hard, and those who lost their lives, so that I may be free.

But our Christian freedom is not the same the freedom described above. It is not our personal freedom that we celebrate. The freedom we’re given in Christ is to be freed from sin FOR service and love to our neighbor.

God gives us a freedom that’s opposite of what we think we need. God gives us a freedom that’s opposite of what nature thinks it wants. God gives us a freedom that gets us out of ourselves. A freedom that drives us toward other people because we are no longer bound.

We can use our freedom to serve those who are captive to sadness and grief by sitting with them, offering a listening ear, and a shoulder to cry on. We can give freedom to those who are enslaved to financial hardships and abandonment and fear with generosity and presence.

You have a role in God’s world, in God’s kingdom. You have been given the gift of freedom to share with others. You have been given gifts to share with others, so that they can also know the freedom from God in Christ.

This 4th of July season, may you celebrate that freedom given to you in Christ. The freedom that allows you to use your voice, your hands, and your heart to serve all of God’s creation.

You’re free, people. Freed in Christ. So, live fully and celebrate that freedom won in Christ!

Peace,

Pastor Sally Williams
