Wisconsin Heights/Barneveld girls soccer player Ashlee Adler (12) clears a loose ball during the Vanguards' loss to Cedar Grove/Belgium in the WIAA Division 4 state semifinals last Friday.

It was a season they'll never forget.

One in which they broke through and made a name for themselves throughout the state.

Unfortunately for the Wisconsin Heights/Barneveld girls soccer team, it came to an end last Friday.

The Vanguards reached the WIAA Division 4 state tournament for the first time in school history. But Cedar Grove/Belgium edged WH/B, 1-0, in a state semifinal game held at Uihlein Soccer Park in Milwaukee.

The Vanguards, seeded fourth at the state tournament, finished the year 12-5. CG/B, the No. 1 seed at state, improved to 16-1-1 before losing to third-seeded Kenosha St. Joseph, 2-1, in the state finals on Saturday.

"I am really proud of the girls," said WH/B coach Bartlett Holmes. "A great journey for our players, coaching staff and our communities. Special run."

CG/B controlled play throughout and held a 23-2 advantage in shots and a 7-0 edge in corner kicks.

Kelsi Handel and Hana King had the Vanguards' two shots on goal, while WH/B keeper Destinee Schmidt was brilliant in net with 15 saves.

CG/B struck just 1 minute, 27 seconds into the game when Amy TenHaken one-timed a corner kick from Haven Minick to put the Vanguards' in a 1-0 hole.

WH/B did a magnificent job keeping CG/B - which entered the game averaging nearly 5.0 goals per game - off the board the rest of the way. But the Vanguards never could net the equalizer.

"To give up a quick and potentially deflating goal two minutes into the game, but then to keep fighting for 88 minutes says a lot about the character of this team," Holmes said.

Despite the loss, the future appears remarkably bright for WH/B.

The Vanguards lose gifted seniors Karlee Adler, Sammie Bollig, Izzy Wright and Schmidt.

But with the overwhelming majority of the roster back, WH/B hopes its memorable run to the state tournament is just the first of many.
