Dear Editor:

The Geiger Counter column in the May 10 issue of the Star News contained profanity; not just your run-of-the-mill profanity, but the f-bomb. I expect more than vulgar ramblings from a weekly community newspaper and respectfully ask that professional journalistic standards be upheld for the Star News. If Mr. Geiger believes that expressing himself in this fashion is in keeping with the community, he is mistaken. As a journalist and regular contributor to a major metropolitan daily newspaper, I believe using such language is a poor, amateurish crutch. Wedged between news of school children, the senior citizen menu and the local pastor’s column, it was offensive and inappropriate in this newspaper. Please don’t give readers another reason not to subscribe to their local newspaper, as the value of quality, paid-subscription newspapers is immeasurable to the community. And, while I’m at it, I am a little tired of Mr. Geiger using his position to self-promote his book.
