Sauk Prairie remains on the right track

May 10, 2018

The Badger North Conference prep track and field meet is less than a week away, being hosted by Sauk Prairie on its home turf for the first time in nearly a decade.

So the Eagles didn’t waste any time, posting some stellar performances in a pair of meets last week.

Sauk Prairie’s boys and girls teams finished second and fourth, respectively, at Tuesday’s Reedsburg Quadrangular.

The Eagles used 37 points to finish as the runner-up in the boys meet, trailing only Reedsburg, which finished with 66 points. The Sauk Prairie girls scored 19 points with DeForest taking first place with 53 points.

The girls’ team followed that up last Friday by winning the four-team Wisconsin Rapids Lincoln ‘Gene Noonan’ Invitational. The Eagles won individual titles in four of the six field events to finish with 754 points, while La Crosse Logan was runner-up with 677 points.

Sauk Prairie’s boys finished third out of five teams at Wisconsin Rapids with 586 points. Host Wisconsin Rapids Lincoln won the team title with 675.5 points.

The Eagles will compete in just one meet this week at the Wisconsin Dells Invitational on Friday beginning at 4 p.m. as it prepares for the Badger North Conference meet May 15.

“We have to be very thoughtful and deliberate this week,” Sauk Prairie coach Andy Sherman said. “We have several athletes dealing with those nagging sort of injuries, shin splints and some sore muscles that due to the unusual circumstances of this season, we have not been able to rest them much because we have had to use every minute of our practices to get better.”

At Wisconsin Rapids, Sauk Prairie freshman Carina Meixelsperger won the long jump (15-6.25), while junior Samantha Marx captured the triple jump (31-1.5).

Sophomore Hannah Kruckman won the high jump (4-10), while juniors Audrey Pape (7-6) and Grace Williams (7-0) were first and third, respectively, in the pole vault.

The Eagles’ 800-meter relay team of sophomore Grace Fauerbach, Marx, Meixelsperger and freshman Kiersten Kobussen also finished first in a season-best time of 1:59.33.

“Obviously we are very proud of the girls for coming home as the champions,” Sherman said. “Many of the girls are struggling with shin splints and those types of injuries, so to see them compete through all of that is a testament to their strength and determination.”

In the boys’ competition at Wisconsin Rapids, Eagles’ senior James Bockhop won the 110-meter hurdles (:14.97) and 300 hurdles (:41.78) titles to earn the Outstanding Male Athlete award at the meet.

Sophomore Hudson Haas won the 3,200 (10:20.82) and Ethan Schad captured the pole vault (13-6) for the Eagles. Also taking first was Sauk Prairie’s 400-meter relay team of juniors Sedric McCann, Craig Wernsing, Ben Pethan and P.J. Lane (:46.86).

“That is a great honor for James and the season he has had so far,” Sherman said of Bockhop. “Ethan was our other individual champion in the pole vault, and our other three boys all placed well in the event. The boys 400 relay ran its fastest time of the season.”

Meanwhile at the Reedsburg quad meet, Sauk Prairie won three individual titles in the boys’ competition. Bockhop won the 110 high hurdles (14.81), Hudson Haas captured the 800 (2:08.00) – just a half second ahead of teammate and runner-up sophomore Camden Desroches — and Ethan Schad won the pole vault (14-0).

On the girls’ side, freshman Emily Herbrand won the 3,200 (13:21.00).

“Ethan finally hit 14 feet in the pole vault,” Sherman said. “Now that he has hit it, I think there is some relief and he will finish the year with great confidence. He is only the third person in school history to ever hit 14 feet, which is pretty amazing.

“The boys distance crew has definitely performed well this season. Cam (Desroches) and Hudson keep pushing each other every day. When you have groups of athletes that can do that with each other, big things can happen.”
