Wisconsin Heights' baseball team was a happy bunch after winning a WIAA Division 3 regional championship last week.

Survive and advance.

All that matters at this time of the year is living to see another day.

Wisconsin Heights' baseball team notched a pair of huge wins last week and won a WIAA Division 3 regional championship.

The top-seeded Vanguards defeated fourth-seeded New Glarus, 4-3, in a regional semifinal last Tuesday. Heights then edged third-seeded Marshall, 3-1, in a regional final last Thursday.

The Vanguards advanced to sectional play, which was held Tuesday at La Crosse Aquinas.

Heights was scheduled to face Mineral Point in a sectional semifinal. The winner of that game met either Osseo-Fairchild or Prairie du Chien in the sectional finals.

The state tournament is June 13-14 at Fox Cities Stadium in Grand Chute.

"All of the teams had solid regular seasons," Heights coach Rod Howard said of sectionals. "Anything can happen and we cannot look past anyone."

Both of the Vanguards' wins were of the nail-biter variety.

Heights trailed New Glarus, 3-1, heading to the bottom of the seventh. But the Vanguards rallied for three runs and toppled their Southern Capitol Conference foe.

Austin Wolfe led off the seventh with a walk, then Clayton Caminiti singled to center putting runners on first and second. Grady Geishirt sacrificed both runners over, then Ethan Cribbs walked to load the bases.

Peyton Flamme grounded into a fielder's choice that scored Wolfe and narrowed the gap to 3-2. But the Vanguards were down to their final out.

Bryce Duhr fell behind in the count, 1-2, before battling back and working the count full. Duhr then ripped a shot to center field that scored Caminiti and pinch runner Caden Eichorst to win the game.

"Bryce has been solid all year," Howard said. "There's not much that phases him."

That made a winner out of reliever Grady Geishirt, who worked 2 2/3 scoreless innings to finish the game. Geishirt didn't allow a hit, walked one and struck out one.

Heights starter Austin Wolfe lasted 4 1/3 innings, allowed five hits, three runs, one earned, struck out five and didn't walk a batter.

New Glarus built a 3-0 lead after 2 ½ innings. But Heights' DJ Geishirt doubled and scored in the third, then the Vanguards kept their season alive with a memorable seventh inning.

"The team had good energy," Howard said. "We have had a few walk off situations this year. They keep grinding through the last out."

Heights then had another thrilling win over Marshall.

Duhr was the once again story for the Vanguards, going the distance to pick up the win. Duhr allowed just four hits, no earned runs, walked three and struck out two.

Heights scored twice in the bottom of the third when Grady Geishirt's RBI single scored DJ Geishirt and Peyton Flamme walked with the bases loaded. The Vanguards added a run in the fourth when Grady Geishirt again had an RBI single to score DJ Geishirt.

That was all the offense Duhr and the Vanguards needed, as they wrapped up a regional title and moved on to sectionals.
