Dinosaurs in the backyard

"They're like walking flowers in the backyard!" exclaims Donna Daniels, a resident of rural Cross Plains, as she strides across the lawn toward the barn where she will select her new chicks. "And they're like dinosaurs; they are dinosaurs."

"They" are chickens, and a small hatchery in Mazomanie, founded by Milwaukee natives who opted for a quiet life in the countryside, is producing a surprisingly diverse array of colorful, egg-producing hens. Those birds, which Mazo Prairie Farm sells in numbers as small as one or two chicks, are currently adorning backyards throughout the area.
