Alan O. Barsness

May 3, 2018

Alan O. Barsness, age 79, died Wednesday, April 25, 2018 at his temporary residence at Brookdale Assisted Living due to a myriad of chronic heart and lung issues.

He was born June 27, 1938 to Orval and Delores (Hefty) Barsness.  He grew up working alongside his father and brother working for the Halfway Praire Creamery and maintained a life-long love of cheese, especially fresh cheese curds.  He graduated from Mazomanie High School in 1956 and went to work for the Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation.  In 1960, Al attended a wedding reception at the Hilltop restaurant which was owned by the Adler family.  He had a chance meeting with Gloria Adler that turned into a courtship and led to their wedding at St. Luke's Lutheran Church in Middleton, WI on October 20, 1962.

In 1965, Al began his work with the United States Post Office in Middleton where he spent the remainder of his working years until he retired in 2000.  His early routes were spent with full day shifts of all walking and pushing a cart around. He was a faithful employee and friendly to all his customers and was offered numerous opportunities for promotion which he tried but ultimately wanted to return to greeting his customers as he was a true people person.  Al and Gloria prayed fervently to grow their family and in 1975 received a call from social services that they had two babies available a boy and a girl.  It became a running joke in the family that Al would say "we should have picked the boy" when he realized how expensive girls were and loved to dote and spoil on Brenda.  Al's dream of a boy came true when Brenda married Matt Goble in 2003 and when his grandsons Ford (2010) and Eli (2011) arrived, Al described how things "couldn't get any better."

Al is survived by his loving wife of 55 years:  Gloria; his daughter: Brenda (Matt) Goble; his grandsons:  Ford and Eli; his brother Dale (Katie) Barsness of Mazomanie; his sister Ginny Roberts of Madison; many nieces, nephews, and cousins that were dear to him and his beloved friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents: Orval in 2002 and Dolores (Hefty) Barsness in 2011.

We would like to thank the staff at SSM-St. Mary's for their loving care through Al's last months and for Agrace HospiceCare and Brookdale Assisted Living for their assistance to the family through a difficult time.  We also want to thank Diego Camacho, Jr who also assisted with the burial of Al's parents and it gave Al such comfort to know that the family would be lovingly led through the grieving process.

Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. on Thursday, May 3, 2018 at West Middleton Lutheran Church, , 3763 Pioneer Road, Verona, WI with the interim Pastor Bonita Vize officiating with a gathering of family and friends from 9:30 a.m. until 10:50 a.m. at the church on Thursday.  Inurnment will be at the Vermont Lutheran Church Cemetery.  The ELLESTAD CAMACHO FUNERAL HOME, 500 N 8th St., Mt. Horeb, WI is serving the family.
