Turkeys were reintroduced into Wisconsin in 1976 and the growth and expansion of wild turkeys in the Badger state is one of game management’s most successful stories in Wisconsin.

Thirty years ago, Wisconsin traded ruffed grouse to Missouri for Eastern wild turkeys. The first turkeys were released in southwest Wisconsin’s coulee country of wooded hills and valleys. Few people believed that this simple initial stocking could lead to the great population increase and statewide expansion of the turkey.
