SP school board approves resolution requesting repairs to State Highway 78

March 8, 2018

The Sauk Prairie School board approved at its Feb. 26 meeting a resolution requesting immediate action by the Wisconsin Department of Transportation to fund and repair State Highway 78.

The resolution requests the WisDOT to repair the highway as an “emergency response, with its driving surface restored for safe and reasonable transportation.”

School district superintendent Cliff Thompson said the resolution was crafted and approved at the Town of Merrimac special meeting. The 11-mile segment was reconstructed from the Village of Prairie du Sac through the Village of Merrimac and opened in fall 2009.

“Unfortunately, problems began to arise immediately,” Thompson said.

He read portions of the resolution, which states, the present condition of the road is no longer considered reasonable for the passage of vehicles on a daily basis.

“Whereas safety should be a primary concern and at present the road is not in reasonable condition for safe transportation for the 2,832 students, 1,678 families and 428 staff the Sauk Prairie School District serves,” the resolution states.

The resolution also states fire and rescue personnel have reported the highway’s present condition is resulting in slower emergency response times. It also says the highway is one of the major traffic corridors that serves the local community and plays a vital role in the local economy.

Thompson said the next business service on the highway is scheduled to be conducted in 2023, and the board is requesting immediate action for the work to be done sooner. The resolution will be sent to the WisDOT and state representatives.

“I think it’s a very good resolution since I drive that route quite often and over the last couple of years it has just gotten absolutely terrible and this winter is unreal,” board member Richard Talmage said. “I hope this will do something to get them moving.”
