Heights girls start slow

Karlee Adler and Wisconsin Heights' girls basketball team dropped their season-opener.

It was a rough start to the new season for Wisconsin Heights' girls basketball team.

The Vanguards dropped their season opener, 57-42, to Watertown Luther Prep last Tuesday. And just XX days prior to that contest, Heights senior forward Kristen Barman suffered a knee injury.

Barman didn't play against Luther Prep and was expected to find out the severity of her injury this week.

"We played well considering only two players have had varsity experience going into that game," Heights first-year coach Bill Sullivan said.

Senior Karlee Adler led the Vanguards with 15 points, hitting all three of her three-point attempts. Sophomore Ashlee Adler had 11 points and freshman Hannah King added eight.

Heights used a late first half run - knocking down a pair of three-pointers - to pull even at the break, 23-23.

The Vanguards struggled in the first nine minutes of the second half, though, as Luther Prep took control of the game.

The Phoenix pushed their lead to six, then spread the floor, forcing the Vanguards to foul. Luther Prep then hit 13-of-14 free throws down the stretch and finished the game making 19-of-24 (79.2%) foul shots.

"We had really good looks in the paint, but failed to convert the shots," Sullivan said. "I thought we had good shot selection throughout the night, but just didn't finish inside."
