MHS girls spikers third at Racine Park Invite

Middleton’s girls volleyball team had another busy week, and came through it with flying colors.

The Cardinals notched a big win over Verona last Tuesday. Middleton then went 3-2 overall and finished in third place at the Racine Park Invite last Saturday.

The Cardinals’ 25-21, 25-14, 25-23 win over Verona might have been their best match of the season.

Lily Welti led Middleton with four aces, eight kills and seven digs, while Jennifer McGinnis had eight kills and 11 digs. Kayla Underwood had 22 assists and Ashley Harris had 10 assists.

Hannah Flottmeyer had six blocks, Taylor Byington had five blocks and Olivia Farin had eight digs.

“We played great volleyball and never let them or their crowd into the match,” Middleton coach Franco Marcos said. “It was one of the best matches that we have played so far. Our offense and defense got the job done.”

Middleton opened the Racine Park Invite with a 25-7, 25-20 win over host Park. Welti and McGinnis both had 10 kills, while Reagan Thomas had 11 aces. Flottmeyer had five kills and Underwood had 11 assists.

Waukesha West then edged Middleton 25-20, 26-24. Welti had eight kills and two aces, Flottmeyer had four blocks and Taylor Byington had three blocks.

Middleton then toppled Racine Horlick, 25-19, 25-23. Welti had nine kills and Olivia Farin had eight digs and one ace. Flottmeyer and Byington both had four blocks, while Underwood had eight assists.

In the quarterfinals, Middleton rolled past Racine Park, 25-12, 25-12. Welti had seven kills, while Rachael Roberts had two aces. Underwood had 13 assists and Flottmeyer had five kills.

In the semifinals, Oak Creek edged Middleton, 25-19, 13-25, 15-13. Welti had 10 kills, while McGinnis had two aces and six kills. Flottmeyer had seven kills and six blocks, Farin had seven digs and Roberts had nine assists.

“We played well and came up short making it to the finals,” Marcos said.

• On deck: Middleton hosts Madison La Follette Thursday at 6:30, then heads to the Menomonee Falls Invite Saturday beginning at 9 a.m.
