The Cross Plains Firefighters' annual breakfast and open house is scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 1 from 7:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the fire station. All of the department's fire apparatus will be on display.

October is also National Fire Prevention Week from October 8-14 with this year's campaign being "Every Second Counts: Plan 2 Ways Out!" Firefighters will be visiting local schools and informing residents to keep their families safe by having a home escape plan.

According to a National Fire Protection Association survey, only one of every three American households have actually developed and practiced a home fire escape plan. If a fire breaks in your home, you may only have a few minutes to get out safely once the smoke alarm sounds. Everyone needs to know what to do and where to go if there is a fire.
