Arena Locals

August 10, 2017

The big storms in Arena left almost everyone with a pile of brush on the curb. Folks are still cutting trees and dead limbs. The village crews are chipping brush every day but the piles never seem to go away.

With all the rain, a lot of village folks are pumping water from their basements. The water table is higher than their basement floors. You know we’ve had a lot of rain when water stands in sand country.

By the time this column is in the paper, I will have turned 89 on August 9. Maybe Clarence is right, I am getting old. Right now with my sore arm I tend to agree with him. I’m getting therapy once a week and I feel like it’s on the mend.

On a very sad note, our thoughts go out to the Florence Sprecher family. She passed away last week leaving a very caring and large family. We often saw her at the Harrington fall parties. Her daughters Joannie Harrington and Joyce Porter are part of our award winning elementary school team in Arena.

While at Greenway, many of the children and grandchildren stopped in the visit Clarence and I. Thanks ago to all the visitors I had and continue to have. It makes the time sitting around go a lot faster.

This has been a busy weekend at our house. Son Gary’s daughter Jenny is here from her home in Indiana, bringing along part of her family and leaving others back at home. Her daughter Dani came with her friend Ben and Gary loves having them here to stay. It makes for a full house with lots of activity. While here they will visit family and friends including the Helena Carpenters.

Clarence is at the cabin mowing, son Ray brought frog legs to cook, so I better start supper.

One of the things I really like about being home is that for supper I can go outside and pick a ripe tomato and maybe a green pepper and cucumber or two.

Clarence has done a great job with the flowers and vegetable garden. I came home just in time to enjoy it all.
